Reporters Alexandra Kessel and Michelle Manzione visited two classrooms at Lakeland Elementary/Middle School to share the student perspective on the Baltimore riots for ABC News. One of the classrooms visited was Urban Teachers, formerly named Urban Teacher Center (UTC), alum and current 4th grade teacher, Ashley Smith. In the article, "The Real Baltimore: What Lakeland Elementary School Students Had to Say About the Riots," Ashley talked about how she created a space for her students to openly and productively express their voices. She told ABC News, “I knew the students would be coming into class today with a lot of questions about what had taken place. They had heard a lot on TV, from their parents, from their friends. I wanted to provide them with the space to reflect on what they knew.” Click here to read more about Ashley's classroom and her students' perspectives.
