Breakthrough Members Are Pre-Approved to Join Urban Teachers!
Breakthrough Collaborative’s teacher fellows program is a great experience that provides extensive training and coaching on how to be a teacher for students at high need public schools. This preparation makes sure you are truly interested in a career as an urban teacher. That's why Urban Teachers is excited to announce a pre-admissions process for Breakthrough Collaborative Teacher Fellow alums who are now seniors or recent graduates (Juniors are encouraged to apply Early Decision and will still need to join us for a Final Interview).
The mission of Urban Teachers is to prepare highly effective teachers who significantly accelerate student achievement and remain teaching in the nation’s highest-need schools. Urban Teachers accomplishes this by recruiting outstanding candidates, equipping them with state-of-the-art training, and linking their certification to their demonstration of effective teaching practices and skills.
Founded in 2009, Urban Teachers is on the cutting edge of urban school reform by virtue of its link between teacher effectiveness and certification eligibility. Our residents and teachers will provide the necessary proof points to make a national case for educator effectiveness and accountability.
With Urban Teachers you get a comprehensive four-year teacher prep program that includes a year-long residency with over 1500 hours of real classroom experience, a two-year clinical Master’s from Johns Hopkins University School of Education, AmeriCorps membership with up to two Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards ($5,815 each year) towards the $40,000 tuition (you will earn a $20,000 stipend during the first year, health care, room and board for the summer and receive all of your books and materials for your graduate degree), three years of 1:1 coaching from your JHU professors, job placement, learning as a peer group across an entire city.
Urban Teachers requires high accountability for your teaching practice to earn certification.
If you meet Urban Teachers’ minimum criteria of 2.75 undergraduate GPA (with some leeway down to a 2.5 if you have been tutoring in math or have other STEM experience), we are pre-approving you for Urban Teachers. Here’s what you need to complete our application process:
- Submit your transcript with two recommendations
- Compose a brief, well-written essay as part of the pre-approved application process. This essay is also used as part of your Johns Hopkins University School of Education (JHU) application.
- Complete a short application for JHU and pass Praxis Core/Pact tests soon after you receive a “letter of intent” to join Urban Teachers.
Urban Teachers provides financial aid for testing costs and provides study assistance. We have many Breakthrough Collaborative alums who are currently in our program so you can continue to network across our two organizations as you pursue your career in teaching.
Being a teacher trained by Urban Teachers ensures you can improve student achievement!
