Bachelor’s Degree from Accredited Institution

Degree must be conferred by an accredited college by the start of Summer Institute approximately June 16, 2017 (or June 2018 if you are applying Early Decision).

3.0 GPA Preferred

Urban Teachers accepts a minimum overall 3.0 GPA from the degree conferring undergraduate institution only. Urban Teachers will accept an undergraduate GPA of 2.75-2.99 for a few outstanding applicants (i.e., first generation college goer, 3.0 GPA for last two years of college, group membership with our national partners including City Year, Jumpstart and Breakthrough Collaborative, or extensive work with children and youth in low income communities).

Urban Teachers will accept an undergraduate GPA of 2.50-2.99 for STEM majors or STEM work experience, or if you are currently a paraprofessional with one of Urban Teachers school partners in DC or Dallas/Fort Worth school districts. In DC, you also must have at least 10 years of experience.


Urban Teachers will only accept U.S. Citizens and permanent residents. Foreign citizens may apply to Urban Teachers only if they are currently authorized to work in the United States with a ten-year visa.

You will be required to upload proof of permanent residency in the online application.

Foreign University

Foreign citizens who have university level coursework from a foreign institution (non U.S. or U.S. Territory) must have their transcripts evaluated course-by- course and translated in English by a recognized agency such as World Education Services or the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) before being considered.

You must upload a copy of the full evaluation report in the online application to be considered complete.

Urban Teachers’ higher education partner requires the transcript evaluation come directly to them from the evaluation agency (i.e. sealed). They also require a course-by- course evaluation rather than a general degree comparison.

Native Language

For applicants whose native language is not English (permanent residents and foreign citizens), an official copy of your score report from the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required. In order to ensure an applicant’s ability to participate successfully in Urban Teachers’ curriculum, minimum score requirements must be met for admission. The required minimum test score for the TOEFL test are as follows: 600 (paper based), or 100 (internet based). (If you received your undergraduate degree from a U.S. college or university where the coursework was taught in English, this condition may be waived.)

Documentation must be uploaded in the online application to be considered complete.


A resume is optional to apply but will be required if you are invited to a final interview.

Please include any/all experiences in leadership and work with children/youth including the days or dates and approximate hours of involvement in each. Be sure to indicate if this work was in low income communities.

Undergraduate Major Urban Teachers accepts majors in all academic disciplines.

Prior Teacher License (or Certifications) are Permitted on a Case by Case Basis

Individuals with a current or prior teacher license (or certification), conditional or otherwise, MUST disclose this on the application. Individuals MUST also disclose if they participated in a teacher preparation program (either in a school of education program or through an alternative teacher preparation program) leading to licensure, whether or not they ultimately received their license. Regardless of teacher licensure status, all Urban Teachers participants will receive the same program of study and be held to the same accountability standards.

Urban Teachers will not accept individuals who are already certified and already has full-time teaching experience (student teaching is permitted). Urban Teachers is meant to be a training program for novice teachers.

Applicants with prior certification should contact us so we can better understand your background. Because of different state regulations, you may not be able to be placed in the site of your choice.

Urban Teachers serves primarily low income children of color in under-served, urban communities. We seek applicants who are motivated to become an effective teacher in a high needs public school through extensive practice, support and training.
